Hot Tip

Mark McMenamin -- Interior Design, 4/1/2010 12:00:00 AM

manufacturer:
Dum by Dumoffice
product: Pleat
standout: Asymmetrical shades offer a jaunty alternative

Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. That's not only Ralph Waldo Emerson but also Wiebe Boonstra, Martijn Hoogendijk, and Marc van Nederpelt, founders of Dum. Christening their design studio's product arm, Dum by Dumoffice, Pleat pendant fixtures and floor lamps decry uniformity with asymmetrical shades, an off-kilter subsitute for standard coolie-hat and empire shapes. The frames, constructed from powder-coated steel wire and stainless-steel cable, are covered in green, white, or anthracite polyester tagged with red labels. Select one of three standard sizes: 18 inches in diameter by 21 inches high, 30 by 20 inches, and 30 by 34 inches. 31-20-489-36-97; dumoffice.com. circle 427
