Washington, D.C.-based architecture and design firm Hickok Cole is designing a music hall, expected to land LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, in a former J.C. Penney store.
Called the Filmore, the music hall is part of a chain of venues by concert producer Live Nation. Located on Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Maryland, the structure will be demolished with the exception of its art deco facade. The facade will be incorporated into the new building along with a planted roof, the first of its kind for a performance space in the area.
The auditorium, including a main floor and a balcony, will accommodate 2,000 people standing or 500 people seated. The lobby and ticket area will be on the ground floor; the basement will include an office, dressing rooms, a catering area for talent, and a small lounge and food service area for patrons.
Hickok Cole architect Jack Mevorah says the team is designing the venue "in the spirit of Bill Graham's attitude about the Fillmore"--Graham is the former owner of the original San Francisco Fillmore. "If Bill Graham were alive today, this is what he would build."
An 80 person firm led by principals Michael Hickok and Yolanda Cole, Hickok Cole specializes in commercial buildings and mixed-use projects as well as interior design for corporate, institutional, and non-profit clients.
