Rugmark to Discuss Child Labor in San Francisco

The speaking events coincide with this year's Winter Market theme, "Beyond Green."

Mairi Beautyman -- Interior Design, 1/25/2006 12:00:00 AM

Rugmark, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending child labor in the carpet industry will host speaking events during San Francisco Design Center’s Winter Market starting tomorrow January 26. The speaking events will address child labor-free rug certification. The topic coincides with the theme this year at the Winter Market, January 26-27, which is "Beyond Green."

Leaders in the design industry will discuss social and labor issues with the intent to broaden the concept of green design beyond environmental ethics. Speakers include designers Stephanie Odegard, Joan Weissman, and Zoë Luyendijk, as well as Avner Lapovsky (co-principal, Sloan Miyasato showroom), and Nina Smith (executive director, Rugmark).

Keynote speakers at the Winter Market include Bob Adams, Collin Burry, Alexa Hampton, Mayer Rus, Stephanie Odegard, Diane Dorrans Saeks, Susan S. Szenasy, and Paul Vincent Wiseman. Showroom appearances will also be made by the likes of Jiun Ho, Dakota Jackson, Robert Kuo, Tom LaTour, Tom Perlite, The Q Collection, and Joan Weissman.

The Rugmark stamp insures no illegal child labor was used in the manufacture of a carpet or rug.
