What most people want in an investment adviser these days is transparency. At the GSC Group, however, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill preferred translucency. Design partner Stephen Apking and managing partner Peter Magill concealed central storage and support space at the two-level, 26,000-square-foot New York headquarters with a photomural that riffs on the office's bird's-eye view of Central Park. A lushly abstract focal point that gives nearly everyone a simulated window seat, digital artist Cory Arcangel's forest of pixelated foliage was printed on film that the designers inserted between layers of acid-etched glass—framed in stainless steel to create four full-height walls backlit by surface-mounted LEDs.

While the mural evokes the park, Macassar ebony veneer on furniture and woodwork mimics residential aesthetics from the reception area to the conference rooms and offices. Even the carpet is predominantly natural, incorporating wool and goat's hair. We rate that triple A.
