Best of Year Winner, Healthcare: NBBJ: The Cleveland Clinic Miller Family Pavilion, Cleveland, OH
After a decade of explosive growth, with 3.2 million patients now treated annually, the Cleveland Clinic enlisted NBBJ to oversee a 1.3 million-square-foot expansion. Partner Doug Parris began with the heart-care center, ranked number one in the U.S.: He designed the crescent-shape Miller Family Pavilion to consolidate facilities that had previously been spread across the campus. In front of the 1 million-square-foot building's sweeping glass facade, Parris and Peter Walker and Partners placed reflecting pools and poplar trees; directly inside is a double-height lobby with a terrazzo floor. In the meantime, Parris had broken ground for an L-shape, 330,000-square-foot structure directly behind, connected by a four-story great hall: The Glickman Tower now houses urology and kidney departments. In both buildings, minimizing visual clutter created a calming environment. For uplift, there's artwork including pieces by Sarah Morris and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle.
