Just because Sir Terence Conran is already a knight doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate a good night on the town—especially when there is another awards ceremony involved.
The legendary British designer-turned-entrepreneur got just that when he took home two of the top prizes at the recent European Design Awards, hosted by British journalist and television personality Mariella Frostrup on November 3 at the London Hilton Park Lane Hotel.
The 12th annual ceremony for the best of hotel design and architecture across the continent saw Sir Terence’s Conran & Partners take home the Hotel of the Year award for their conversion of a Victorian warehouse into Boundary, a new hotel in the Shoreditch neighborhood of East London. The man himself was also honored with the Oustanding Contribution of the Year award.
Judges for the awards included Ahmed Akudi of Grohe, Stephanie Briggs of Malmaison, Richard Garland of Richmond Design, Khirstie Myles of Marriott International, Andrew Onraet of Von Essen Hotels, and Gordon McKinnon of Rezidor Hotel Group. The panel handed out 11 other awards to recipients including Jestico + Whiles for Architecture of the Year (Conversion of an Existing Building to Hotel Use) for their Andel’s Lodz hotel and Koncept Stockholm for Interior Design of the Year (Restaurant) for the eating establishment at the Story Hotel in their hometown.
The awards were the high point of the two-day Sleep Event hospitality conference, held at London’s Business Design Centre, which featured design stars Marcel Wanders and Chris Sanderson of the Future Laboratory presenting keynotes.
