Carnegie

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Nature. Art. Or, in the case of this recent textile launch, tattoo parlors.

The Tattoo collection's six patterns came to life after creative director Heather Bush noticed a shift in the cultural acceptance of bodily adornment as part of the young urban professional identity. For research, she and her design team took field trips to New York parlors. After isolating symbols that referenced ethnic and pop culture, the team translated them into woven textiles in 53 colorways—targeting retail, corporate, hospitality, and health-care specifiers. (All patterns exceed 75,000 double Wyzenbeek rubs.)

Abstract sunbursts in differing diameters explode across Soleil, a polyester-rayon blend. Exotic arabesques, scrolls, and curves float across nylon Ink. Wired, a cotton-wool blend, takes a sharp look at the zigzag. The three remaining patterns are nylon Flash Art, cotton-polyester Full Sleeve, and Co-exist, a cotton-polyester blend. 110 North Centre Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY 11570; 800-727-6770; carnegiefabrics.com. circle 342

Ross Lovegrove, Patrick Norguet, and Lauren Rottet are just a few of the big names who have collaborated with Bernhardt Design. For this year's collection, though, the company tapped unknown talent from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Seven students created products that are not only appropriate for the brand but are also able to be mass-produced. A steel base supports Jorge Cruzata's Aire table in painted walnut and glass. Robbyn Carter's Segue bench combines ash and steel. Emi Fujita's Emi lounge seat has brushed stainless-steel arms and legs and a floating back. Halcon

Drawing on her background as a trained welder and sculptor, interior designer Barbara Zieve introduced her second collaboration with this manufacturer. Stria is a conference group of case goods that marry rigorous and organic, masculine and feminine. Zieve's tables, credenzas, and media cabinets never fail to engage the user visually, from every angle.

Better yet, the designer's attention to form hasn't sacrificed the seamlessly integrated outlets and wire-management capacity necessary for today's conference rooms. The collection offers three conference tables with power and communication provisions housed in the base. Meanwhile, a wall unit perfectly sized for plasma-screen TVs also features sliding-tray storage for DVDs and a built-in video teleconferencing camera option. The Corian-topped mobile cart offers an additional CD storage cabinet, plus drawers with flip-down work surfaces for laptops and other equipment.

The pieces come in almost any veneer on the market, in 25 of the manufacturer's standard Chemcolor paint finishes, or in any DuPont Corian color. Finishes may be combined, too—with different ones for tabletops and bases. One tabletop, a truncated ellipse of bone white bordered by sage green, is all Corian; meanwhile the base is painted in a Chemcolor version of taupe. 1811 Second Avenue NW, Stewartville, MN 55976; 507-533-4235; halconcorp.com. circle 352
