'Tis the season...

Cindy Allen -- Interior Design, 12/1/2001 12:00:00 AM

It's that time of year again, when we look back at our long

list of deeds to see how they'll measure up under Santa's scrutiny. In this holiday season's quid pro quo, we hope to

be lavished with a) sustained, exponential growth for interior design in the new year, b) an antigravity bloom of new trends, superlative projects, and interesting innovations, here and abroad, and c) love, harmony, and—lo and behold—world peace. Our own wish list notwithstanding, though, look back on the design world we did and, I might add, with fondness. AD 2001 yielded another bumper crop of virtuosity, proving that excellence is inexhaustible in our industry.

For the year's final issue, we celebrate "The Best of 2001" with a collection of takes juxtaposing design by concept rather than context. These pages pay tribute to what happens at any moment at the periphery of our camera lenses and, most important, our senses. With a collage of evocative portraits, uniquely personal to the editors of Interior Design, we explore that quasi-imaginary, often overlooked twilight place. It's a space we all are aware of and never quite seem to freeze in sharp focus, but we know it's where the supreme triggers of our creativity and ingenuity reside.

Wishing you the best for the new year, I'm off to a game of Quidditch.
