In 2007, Swanke Hayden Connell Architects (SHCA) will begin construction on the SLAVA, a mixed-use complex that with span three city blocks in downtown Moscow. The architecture, interior design, master planning, and historic preservation firm, which recently opened a Moscow office, is working with Russian developer Stolny Grad on the project.
Composed of six buildings offering between nine and 22 stories, the 5,170,000-square-foot facility will be located on Leningradsky Prospect, a major artery, within walking distance of the Belorouskii train station, linking Red Square to the Moscow suburbs.
On the first second, and third floors, a retail podium will feature boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Restaurants and cafes will flank what the architects bill as the heart of the building—the large, enclosed “Winter Garden.” This central public space, showcasing 100-foot ceilings, features a permanent skating rink. An additional restaurant on the top floor will take advantage of sweeping 360 degrees panoramic views to the city. The rest of the building will consist of 167,000 square meters of office space and an underground parking facility with space for over 4,000 cars.
“The tallest of the six office buildings is designed as the signature piece of the complex, intended to become a new symbol in the Moscow skyline,” says Roger Klein, design principal for SHCA.
In surrounding area currently zoned for industrial use, several buildings are now offering residential and commercial space. The building is expected to be completed in 2010. SHCA, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, operates from offices in New York City, London, Paris, Istanbul, Sheffield, Miami, and Washington, D.C., in addition to Moscow.
