Ixc.Edition

Japan's Ixc.Edition held its U.S. coming-out party at the 2008 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. The debutantes, pieces by a global network of designers, all exhibited high-quality materials, sophisticated engineering, and a hyper-contemporary minimalism. Made from lightweight honeycomb panels of recyclable aluminum, David Chipperfield's razor-sharp Air Frame tables, desks, sideboards, and upholstered seating would look right at home in a loft or office. And one look at the inward-curving silhouettes of sofas, chairs, benches, ottomans, and low tables by Gwénaël Nicolas explains why he named the series Boomerang. Richard Mishaan Studio

Though the dimensions of the seat are certainly generous, at 24 inches wide by 29 deep, it's the High Back 2675's very high back, 43½ inches, that truly cocoons the sitter. Kelly Wearstler, whose interiors firm used to be known as KWID, has put her fashionable stamp on textiles and wall coverings with the House of KWID for Decorator's Walk. One of the collection's eight patterns, Giraffe Linen is actually a linen-cotton blend. This designer infused his Prosperity collection with a touch of feng shui, which dictates that intersecting elements bring harmony to the home. We figure that goes double when they're rendered in Macassar ebony veneer , orange lacquer, and white leather and placed on the headboard of a queen-size bed. Patrick Chia, the design director of the National University of Singapore, dreamed up Idea of a Vase for a tabletop-themed exhibition organized by the school's design incubator. Arik Levy has lent his experimental artistry to Hertz. Producing rugs for ecclesiastical settings for 120 years is bound to teach you a thing or two about quality and longevity—but is also bound to keep your design explorations on the conservative side. With the opening of a showroom in the New York Design Center, this manufacturer broadens its creative scope while maintaining a focus on bespoke workmanship. The newest patterns, intended for hotels, restaurants, and residences, mark chief designer Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg's 20-year tenure with the company. "I believe that a global folkloric handicraft tradition is the backbone of everything. It's in our souls," she says. "You have to dig deep into that innate archive and give it a modern twist." For hand-tufted Lace, she took a pattern from lowbrow plastic tablecloths, then elevated it via natural materials (wool and linen) and elegant colorways (blue/white and white/black/silver, as well as custom options). Durable wool yarns and twine combine to create the rough bouclé finish of Klint, inspired by open plains and deserts. Augmenting Ullberg's offering are rugs and runners by Kasthall's design team, including the irregular, overlapping fields of wilton woven Brygga; the op-art pattern of wool nylon Tun; and the dual pile height of woven bouclé Ro, which is 100 percent wool. 212-421-0220; kasthall.com. circle 447
