AIA Los Angeles Solicits Entries

The Southern California Institute of Architecture will exhibit winning projects.

The next American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention, to be held June 8-10 in Los Angeles, will draw all eyes to creativity from the AIA Los Angeles Chapter. The chapter is seeking entries to the 2006 AIA/LA Design Awards, Decade Awards, and NEXT LA Awards. Registration must be received by February 23.

The competitions, intended to celebrate the creativity, diversity, and achievement, are open to Los Angeles-based architects and projects that are located in the Los Angeles area by non-L.A. architects. Winning projects will be displayed at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-arc).

For the Design Awards projects, this year’s jury panel includes Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne, of Morphosis, SCI-Arc founder Ray Kappe, of Kappe Architects/Planners, UCLA department of architecture, and urban design chair Sylvia Lavin.

The new Decade Awards, acknowledging past achievements in Design Excellence, are open to projects that have won AIA/LA Design Awards from 1996-2005. Art Center president Richard Koshalek, Urban Partners principal Daniel Rosenfeld, and international architecture writer Joseph Giovannini will select winners for this category.

Unbuilt projects will be honored by the Next LA Awards. Winners will be determined by Eric Owen Moss, of Eric Owen Moss Architects; Nick Seierup of Perkins & Will; John Enright, of Griffin Enright Architects; Rick Gooding of Chu & Gooding Architects; and Jeffrey Inaba of HOLA.

A non-refundable registration fee of $185 (for AIA members) for the first entry into any of the competitions and $155 for each additional entry into any of the competitions must accompany the entry form. Non-AIA member fees are $255 and $185, respectively.
