Scrap, reclaimed, urban salvage. These are the three types of sustainable wood represented in "Second Growth," an exhibit of some 25 pieces by furniture designer William Stranger, at the Pasadena Museum of California Art through January 4, 2009. Citing Frank Lloyd Wright, George Nakashima, and William McDonough as inspirations, Stranger finds the materials forming his tables, chairs, and benches mostly in the Los Angeles area—be it defunct bowling alleys or debris-strewn construction sites. The woods vary in species—walnut, maple, acacia—which Stranger often combines. But all have nontoxic finishes.
