Carnegie Hall, Underground*

Whether the New York Philharmonic takes up residence or not, one thing is sure at Carnegie Hall: Polshek Partnership Architects has completed a new lower-level recital venue. Formerly a movie theater, Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall opens September 12.
Work on Zankel Hall began in 1999 under the supervision of Tishman Construction Company. Over 6,300 cubic yards of bedrock were removed from underneath the building to create the volume of space called for in the design.
The completed Zankel Hall features three adjustable auditorium configurations-end stage, center stage and flat floor-which will allow artists and audiences the opportunity to experience music in a variety of settings. It also incorporates the latest technology allowing for multimedia productions and interactive educational activities.
The new, flexible 644-seat performance and education center is located directly under Isaac Stern Auditorium and will be host to over 80 concerts and 28 education events during the 2003-2004 season. Zankel Hall restores Andrew Carnegie's original 1891 concept of one building housing three outstanding venues of different sizes. This new space allows Carnegie Hall to integrate programming and expand its concert season and existing education programs.
We would love your feedback!
