Schindler's Flats

In 1995, the Republic of Austria acquired Rudolph Schindler's Pearl M. Mackey apartments, built in Los Angeles in 1939. Now part of the city's MAK Center for Art & Architecture, a spin-off of Vienna's Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst, the building has become the home of a prestigious six-month residency program for artists, advanced architecture students, and new architecture graduates. Phased renovations included an archive, a penthouse for guests, and four highly individualized live-work spaces. With an eye to the future, preservation architects Space International punched up Schindler's original palette with accent colors on his extensive built-ins.
