A triumvirate of three of the most influential organizations in design, the American Society of Interior Designers, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality, have joined forces to create a new contest that gives designers a chance to design the ideal sustainable hotel suite.
The first-ever Sustainable Design Competition will be open to teams of up to five design professionals in addition to emerging designers who can compete for the student and young professional award. Both award-winning designs will be displayed on the floor the Hospitality Design Expo, taking place in Las Vegas from May 19-21, and in the pages of both ASID and NEWH magazines.
"Incorporating sustainability into interior design projects is transitioning from an opportunity to a priority," says ASID executive director Thom Banks. "By recognizing and supporting healthier hotel environments, we are raising industry and consumer awareness on the importance of green design."
Submissions, due August 31, will be judged based on the USGBC's LEED Green Building Rating System. Mandatory design elements for all submissions are water efficient fixtures for bathrooms, energy efficient lighting, furniture, linens, carpet or flooring, wall covering or paint, and recycling programs. An entrance fee of $250 is also required although it will be waved for students.
