Sale of the Century

Collector Torsten Bröhan has a renowned eye for important 20th-century design. He's supplied objects to both New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Paris's Musée d'Orsay. On March 8, Sotheby's London is auctioning some 250 of his pieces in Pioneering 20th Century Design: The Torsten Bröhan Collection, including Gerrit Rietveld's Zig-Zag armchair, circa 1938.

Old Meets New

"The Elegance of Silence," at Tokyo's Mori Art Museum from March 29 to June 19, explores the influence of East Asian traditions on contemporary works. Among the 30 artists from China, Japan, and Korea is Xu Bing and his hanging carved-acrylic The Living Word.

Eye on the Prize

Congratulations to Brandon Warren. The student at California College of the Arts won the $5,000 first prize for the inaugural Eye for Why, a competition in which students from NASAD-accredited programs and IDSA student members reinvent everyday objects with a commitment to function. Jennifer Olson's fabric-covered light, Booie, placed third.

Fab Four

London's Design Museum is presenting a $47,000 prize for its third annual Designer of the Year competition. The four nominees' entries, including Jasper Morrison's kettle for Rowenta, are on view from March 5 to June 19. The judges—designer Ilse Crawford, novelist Hari Kunzru, NESTA director Hugo Manassei, museum director Alice Rawsthorn, and last year's winner, Daniel Brown—vote in June.

City of Designer Love

DesignPhiladelphia is the city's new cultural initiative to encourage public awareness of design. The inaugural exhibitions, workshops, and lectures held throughout the city from April 1 to 17 coincide with the Philadelphia Museum of Art's "Salvador Dalí" exhibition, which features his Lobster Telephone, 1938.
