There is no doubt that the design community is feeling the affects of the global financial upheaval. For mid-century and antique retailers, dwindling foot traffic and corresponding sales has many of these small business owners drumming up creative ways to keep the lights on. Vintage and Modern (V&M), a new Web site catering to the design trade, is proving to be an invaluable resource for many antique dealers around the country.

Launched in 2006, V&M serves as a virtual storefront for dealers and manufacturers to market their wares to a wider audience. A parallel resource for interior designers, the site offers an online marketplace where buyers can shop for antiques, modern furnishings, art, and jewelry sans the exhausting pavement-pounding hunt for the perfect piece.

"In an Internet business you can never stand still,” states Bill Indursky, Sansburry’s business partner and V&M co-founder.

"The online visibility enables our dealers to communicate with a new world of customers,” adds Chris Sansburry, Indursky’s business partner and V&M co-founder. “Visitors can easily shop our site and make purchases from anywhere and at anytime."

V&M provides suppliers with an online presence giving them international exposure, as well as the opportunity to increase revenue. To a buyer’s advantage, the Web site has recently doubled the number of national dealers on its roster, increasing the product range. Not to be confused with a consignment business model, V&M allows customers to contact dealers directly, avoiding a middleman. New items are uploaded and available every Tuesday morning, and customers can sign up to receive a weekly email highlighting new inventory.
