Louis Poulsen Lighting
We like the hovercraft look of Vesa Honkonen and Julle Oksanen's Plate. A two-layer floating glass plane provides ambient illumination by bouncing light vertically and horizontally.Louis Poulsen Lighting

Showstopping performances
We all know those unobtrusive lamps, intended to sit primly on a bedside table. Steven Wine and Michael Landon of And Bob's Your Uncle don't make anything like that. Wine draws on his experience as a glassblower and metalworker. Landon offers expertise from the fashion side. (His daring costume de- signs have appeared in Broadway's The Lion King.) Together, the duo has designed dazzling custom fixtures for architecture firm Tsao & McKown and interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz. For the Miami residence that Noriega-Ortiz designed for Lenny Kravitz, And Bob's Your Uncle created this chandelier with hand-linked acrylic rings. Versions of the sconce and pendant, in rooster feathers and rhinestones, grace a lingerie shop in Tennessee. As Wine confides, "The crazier we get, the more our clients like it." And Bob's Your Uncle.
The top brass
For a dramatic turn-on, consider Boyd Lighting Company's options by Doyle Crosby. The Rings pendant ups the glamour factor in acrylic and solid brass, shown in a finish of gossamer gold. Incandescent or fluorescent lamping is available. Embarcadero, a fluorescent ceiling fixture by Andrew Belschner and Joseph Vincent, oozes graphic appeal with a hand-slumped glass bowl framed in a square of solid brass. The design also comes as a wall fixture and pendants. Boyd Lighting Company

Encore!
In 2001, light sculptor John Wigmore introduced his first line for Ralph Pucci International. This year, he adds 30 designs to the collection. Loft-ready showpieces include a giant cross and two equally oversize hanging lamps in Japanese paper, acrylic, and steel. Smaller-scale floor versions, striped sconces, and wall-mounted light boxes are likely to attract kudos from the loftless.Ralph Pucci International

Glass work
Penta definitely has a light touch. The Italian illuminator's delicate New Classic collection, by Gaia Bellavia, serves as a fine example. The handblown glass table lamps come in three sensuous shapes and a series of seductive colors, including amber, amethyst, fumé, and aquamarine. Shade options—such as this one in draped silk—provide an elegant finish. At Casa Bella.
David Design
The singularly talented and multidisciplinary Stephen Burks has designed everything from graphics to furniture to interiors. Most recently, he created the Light Frame pendant, a spindly beauty in clear or colored acrylic. 25 Stortorget, 211 34 Malmö, Sweden; 46-40-300000; david.se.
Universal Display & Design
Made from a durable fiberglass shell with resin tiles, these mosaic hanging lamps are resistant to cracking. At Universal Display & Design.
Modular Lighting Instruments
Downut is a recessed down-light with a body of lacquered aluminum, a polycarbonate filter, and an MDF disk. The disk can be painted the same color as the ceiling for a totally seamless look. 258-260 Rumbeeksesteenweg, 8800 Roeselare, Belgium; 32-51-26-56-56; supermodular.com.
Örsjö Belysning
Having nabbed awards at Light 2003 and the Stockholm Furniture Fair, it could be said that Matti Klenell's Kapoor pendant has a bright future. But design like this deserves better than clichés. The piece won us over with its sensual trumpet-shape lamp and the atmospheric light emanating through the refined mesh shade. 1B Telegrafgränd, 111 30 Stockholm, Sweden; orsjo.com.
Vitra
Verner Panton's hypnotically cool Ring lamp features an injection-molded acrylic target form whose convex bull's-eye covers the light source. Suitable for wall or ceiling applications. At Vitra.
George Kovacs
The popular Torii series, by Dawn Ladd and KC Dering, was recently revamped for the bath. A sleek matte brushed-nickel finish has replaced blackened steel, and white etched opal-glass shades offer greater splash resistance than the former version in Mokuba linen. At Minka Group.
Foscarini
A beauteous blob with otherworldly appeal, Lampoon by Aldo Cibic is made of handblown glass in yellow or white. The design comes as a table lamp, ceiling lamp, and pendant, too. At North American Light Spectrum.
Resolute
The Jill sconce is part of a family of fixtures that owe their mottled look to the same process: rolling a hot glass bubble of base color in crushed glass of a different color. Available either in ivory or in faux tortoiseshell. At Resolute.
Lumetta
It's hard to pick a favorite from this selection of Shadow pendants, distinguished by a slim line along the sidewall lens. Customers can choose from a panoply of laminated papers and textiles, plus custom sizes and shapes. At Lumetta.
Tricoire Design
Alexis Tricoire has tried his hand at everything from a scanner for Epson to a hair-spray bottle for L'Oreal. He also designs fabulous furniture and lighting. His latest, a polycarbonate wall light called LF, pays tribute to artist Lucio Fontana. 61 Rue de Reuilly, 75012 Paris, France; 33-6-86-67-25-98; tricoiredesign.com. circle 349
Gecko Designs
Designed by Katherine and Geoff Ladd, the Pole series is constructed of hand-spun glass-fiber threads. Oversize proportions make the pieces great for entryways, hotels, and restaurants. Floor versions and chandeliers available as well. 10/4 New England House, New England Street, Brighton BN1 4GH, U.K.; 44-1273-690994; geckodesigns.co.uk. circle 350
Cherry Tree Design
Metal adds a contemporary accent to the Meridian table lamp, featuring a brushed-aluminum base. The shade is paper and cherry wood. At Cherry Tree Design.
Serien
We love the textural quality and atmospheric light of the Reef suspension lamp. Don't be fooled by the dimpled delicacy of the ceramic-foam shades. You can drop them in the dishwasher for a quick cleaning. At Plug Lighting.
Oluce
Just arrived in the U.S., this distinctive Italian collection comprises outdoor fixtures and eclectic indoor options. The spectral Nuvola is one of the latter. North American Light Spectrum.
Baldinger Lighting
Adam Tihany's lighting line just got bigger. To complement his three sconces for the company, he recently added the deco-inspired Tihany pendant. Offered in a number of finishes; diffuser in acrylic or faux alabaster. Baldinger Architectural Lighting.
Les Migrateurs
In beech with a PVC shade, Sami Sader's simply sophisticated sconce takes a cue from '30s French design. 188 Duane Street, New York, NY 10013; 212-966-8208; lesmigrateurs.com.
Squeeze me
Fluorescents are typically sterile. Not Andrea Valentini's surprisingly humanistic and touchable Squeeze, with its handmade shade in undulating polyethylene. As of April 22, Squeeze will cast a glow on Valentini's Cocoons installation, part of the "National Design Triennial: Inside Design Now" at New York's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Andrea Valentini.
