For three-and-a-half days, the interior design community—from professionals and manufacturers to students—will descend upon picturesque San Francisco for the American Society of Interior Designers conference, Interiors 07. Emceed by master of ceremonies, Lloyd Princeton, president and CEO of Design Management Company, the conference will feature over 60 events and programs, many of which will be CEU accredited. Read our brief overview of Interiors 07 highlights you won’t want to miss. The conference takes place from March 15 to 18 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco.
Thursday, March 15
ASID Chapter Awards Luncheon, 12–1:30pm
The work of 48 ASID chapter presidents around the country are highlighted in this special luncheon.
Tours, 2–5pm
Emphasis on Green: Private Tour of the M.J. de Young Museum
Not too long ago, this stunning copper odyssey, known as the de Young, was completed by award-winning Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, in collaboration with local firm Fong & Chan. But not only is the institution a treat for the eyes, but for the heart, too, with its green building principles that range from storm water leaching to recycled-content materials.

Keynote, 9–10am
Designs on the Future, Using Design Methodology as a Predictive Tool
IDEO Smart Space leader Fred Dust will present in this keynote address, case studies ranging from the visions of tomorrow’s cities to today’s realities. Each study will demonstrate the different yet important aspects of design today—from emotion and function to impact on the community and the future.
Learning Labs, 10:15am–12:15pm
Substance and Style: Twelve Green and Gorgeous Case Studies
Interiordesign.net’s own GreenZone editor, Penny Bonda, FASID, LEED AP, along with author Katie Sosnowichik, remind design professionals that it’s possible to transform the principles of our ideals into reality. This inspirational presentation includes projects, varying in size and scope of green design initiatives, such as Nusta Spa, by Envision; HOK’s own offices in Saint Louis; and Herman Miller’s BG building, by The Environments Group, among others. (Bonda will also be leading the LEED-CI Technical Review Workshop on Thursday, March 15.)
The Impact of Workplace Design on Generational Differences
"This ain’t your grandpa’s office" rings true when discussing the workplace today. Diversity specialist Sandy Crocker focuses on how various workplace designs affect the current generations of employees—from baby boomers to generations X and Y—and what is characteristic of their physical needs and interaction styles. Historical data and studies in the presentation will inform workplace designers on how to accommodate all types.

Designers Online: How Interior Designers Use the Web
An essential part of business today, the internet is fast becoming a resource for interior designers. ASID’s Joan Gaulden, FASID, and Michael Berens talk about how designers can use the web to search for information and products on the web, and from the other end, what designers are looking for once they reach your web site.
Hotel Design with Joie de Vivre Hospitality
Design has become a major factor for today’s jet-set, well-heeled, or seasoned traveler in booking their hotel stays. So Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the largest boutique hotel company in California, opens three of its properties’ doors to provide an inside look at boutique hotels, and the concept development process the company uses. Creative director Matt Harvey leads the tour, as well as a case study presentation of eight new hotels by Joie de Vivre. The session ends with cocktails at the four-star Hotel Vitale.
City Civic Center Plaza—Design and Architecture Past and Present
Fifth-generation San Franciscan Jim Haas leads a walk through the Civic Center historic district—one of the country’s finest Beaux Arts treasure troves. Both buildings and public artwork will be highlighted on the tour.

Get Outside the Box—From an Interiors Perspective: Sustainability, Innovation and Design
How does one reduce a project’s ecological footprint? Walsh Bishop Associates’s Rachelle Schoessler Lynn, ASID, CID, LEED AP, delves into the topic by discussing how to use resources more efficiently, evaluate a material’s ecological benefits, and look for opportunities to incorporate salvaged materials.
The Safe Home
It’s not enough to think about the aesthetics of an environment. Bonneville Design’s Lisa Bonneville, FASID, examines the role of the interior designer in creating spaces that suit clients’ needs, but also promote and ensure safety. She touches upon such questions as when and with whom designers collaborate to implement safety features and how to educate clients on the elements of safe interiors.

Steelcase’s Chris Congdon presents a seminar that emphasizes that brand is more than a logo—it’s the essence of a company. He discusses the relationship between brand and culture, and designing workplaces that affect the ability of an organization to live the brand.
Transforming a Getaway into a Sacred Retreat—Natural Design Trends
For some, relaxation is all about becoming one with nature—or at least feeling surrounded by it. In this seminar, author Susan Fredman, ASID, and Barb Ince, ASID, talk about the calming and nurturing effects of nature and the elements, and how to use these to create serene spaces. Dozens of projects will be used to demonstrate true escapism.
