Update

Catch these events in August and September

Edited by Meghan Edwards -- Interior Design, 7/1/2007 12:00:00 AM

  1. Slot Canyon, one of the pieces selected for "The Painterly Photographs of Carlos Esguerra" at New York's Tama Gallery, beautifully illustrates this artist's vivid use of shape, line, and color. His images capture the natural world with extreme precision—before turning to the camera, he spent 36 years as a computer consultant. September 4-22; 212-566-7030; tamagallery.biz.

  2. Exploring a continuum from Josef Albers to Liam Gillick, "Minimalism and Applied: Minimalism in Art and Design From 1920 to Today" comes to DaimlerChrysler Contemporary, a nonprofit gallery in Berlin. Vincent Szarek made Moving Stereo, 2006, from urethane, fiberglass, and automotive audio equipment. September 21–January 7; 49-30-259-41-42-0; sammlung.daimlerchrysler.com.

  3. Cross-cultural collisions abound in the Des Moines Art Center's "Enrique Chagoya: Borderlandia." The Mexican native offers a rich fusion of contemporary Western iconography, including political prints, and ancient Aztec influence. When Paradise Arrived, a drawing in charcoal and pastel, is one example of his fantastical narratives. September 21–January 6; 515-277-4405; desmoinesartcenter.org.

  4. Summer couldn't be brighter in Finland as top designers convene for the fifth international Alvar Aalto Design seminar at the University of Jyväskylä. One of two accompanying exhibitions, "It's a Beautiful Day!" at the nearby Museum of Central Finland, showcases designs by the event's six keynote speakers. Louise Campbell's cobweblike Retreat Funnel, a steel-thread chair wrapped in white angora wool, hints at the seminar's focal question: Can integrating nature and technology change the future? August 31–September 30; 358-14-624-809; alvaraalto.fi.

  5. Robin Rhode transforms two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional reality through digital animation, photographs, film, and performance—for example, sketching a guitar and amplifier on a wall, then pulling them into his own active space by filming himself playing. A still from the digital animation Color Chart prefigures his new series for "Robin Rhode: Walk Off" at Munich's Haus der Kunst. September 16–January 6; 49-89-21127-113; hausderkunst.de.
