Montina

This company challenged Konstantin Grcic to design a chair, "pure and simple." Tabac was his response. The designer's mature control of the form in ash wood is quietly evident in the finely drawn profile. Phone 917-237-0124 for information.

Montis

The Nika sofa by Dutch designer Gijs Papavoine is distinguished by a slender form and heavenly comfort. The subtly curving backrest with unique leaf-spring surrounds the sitter in cloudlike buoyancy. Visit site.

Shaver/Melahn Studios

The refined detailing of Rick Shaver's Beverly dining chair transforms it from ordinary to distinctive. The back's crisscross wood stretcher is echoed at the chair's base and again in the upholstery's subtle stitching.

Pierce Martin

The Moyo chair summons the exoticism of Far Eastern antiques and adventures. Handcrafted of rattan in a natural finish, the chair is 27 inches wide by 31 inches deep by 38 inches high. Visit site.

Donghia Furniture/Textiles

This chaise longue is from the Victoire collection, designed in collaboration with Paul Mathieu. Though inspired by 18th-century Provençal shapes, the piece still exudes a distinctly American luxury. Visual tension and graceful balance are achieved by contrasting understated lines with oversize scale. Visit site.

Dessin Fournir

The Lute side chair by Kerry Joyce emphasizes fine materials and expertly crafted details. But for all the restraint, we detect a definite note of whimsy. The walnut piece comes with a fully upholstered seat and measures 19 1/2 inches wide by 20 1/2 inches deep by 33 1/2 inches high. Visit site.

Walters Wicker

The handsome Bedford woven leather armchair offers an interesting mix of a neatly tailored shape and an artisanal surface. It's easy to imagine Bedford in either traditional or modern settings as well as contract and residential environments. The meticulously crafted leather is offered in an array of custom colors. Visit site.

Newman

Mark Newman says that he looked to the sets of black-and-white movies when he designed the DeMille dining chair. Indeed, its glamour evokes cinematically moderne period pieces, with a crisp silhouette, biscuit tufting, and elegantly curved back legs. Available in 10 standard finishes—popcorn not included.
