The Art of Carpeting

Madeline Weinrib grew up surrounded by rugs. As the granddaughter of the ABC Carpet & Home founder, she knew the difference between a hand-knotted Tibetan and an antique Oriental from a very young age. However, her muse took her on another route: fine art and painting. "I started out as an abstract painter," she says. "I had exhibits both in the United States and abroad. But now I have expanded my canvas to include carpets." She began with a series of rugs for Christopher Farr in London. Then, she developed a connection with Michaelian and Kohlberg. "We were making Tibetan carpets with the same factory in Nepal," remembers Weinrib. Based on that relationship, Weinrib designed a series of flat weaves that are hand-woven in India using pure wool. Shown here are five of the nine patterns: Noon, Shikar (a Hindi word meaning hunter), Rosa, Kandou (Islamic for honeycomb), and Skyland. The limited-edition rugs are offered in various colorways. Sizes include 5 ft.6 in. by 8 ft.6 in. and 8 ft. by 11 ft.; custom sizes and runners are available.
