In the middle of his career, Pablo Picasso began collaborating with potters at the Madoura factory in Vallauris, France. His Fluffy Haired Woman, a 1964 result of that experiment, is among the ceramic sculptures in "Pursuing Picasso"at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock. They're appearing alongside his paintings, drawings, and lithographs as well as works by contemporaries George Braque, Juan Gris, and Max Beckmann. June 2–September 3; 501-372-4000; arkarts.com.

In "Garry Knox Bennett: Call Me Chairmaker,"the newly reopened Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington presents 52 pieces by this sculptor turned furniture designer. Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, George Nakashima, and Gerrit Rietveld have all inspired Bennett, who works with the band saw, drill press, and milling machine to create unusual effects. His XYZ chair in wood and aluminum channels Rietveld's Zig-Zag from 1934. July 6–November 26; 425-519-0770; bellevuearts.org.

The Tama gallery's "Wet in Summer"beats the New York heat with 30 hand-painted narra-wood canoe paddles, made in Pagsanjan Falls in the Philippines during the 1940's and ''s. Part of the same show, Philippine light sculptor Perry Mamaril keeps things cool with two site-specific water-fountain installations: As the water cascades into Chinese 19th-century ceramic jars, it's lit with neon, LEDs, and fiber optics. What do 100,000 people chatting on the Internet look like? University of California, Los Angeles, associate statistics professor Mark Hansen and Yale University School of Art graphic-design critic Ben Rubin envision them in Listening Post.
