Fairmont Hotels and Resorts has launched "Adopt-a-Shelter," a partnership between the Plaza Hotels and Safe Horizon, an organization that assists and provides shelter for battered women. The effort was spearheaded by Fairmont's vice president of public affairs, Ann Layton, who discovered a repository of furniture, linens, and rugs in the sub-basements of the company's 70 hotels that could be put to charitable use. V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls, put Layton in touch with Safe Horizon, one of their beneficiaries. What resulted is a three-year commitment to form partnerships with and donate furnishings to shelters for women in major cities and, one hopes, to inspire others in the industry to follow their example.
