Mies Too

Staff -- Interior Design, 7/17/2001 12:00:00 AM

The life and work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is the subject of two concurrent exhibits in New York this summer: Mies in America, on view at the Whitney Museum through September 23rd, and Mies in Berlin, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) through September 11th. Together, the shows celebrate the full scope of the architect's career, from his role in the Bauhaus and the European avant-garde to his impact on American modernism following his 1938 emigration. Drawing on recent scholarship, the show reveals traditionally overlooked influences on his early work as well as his confrontation with American technology.

The Whitney is located at 945 Madison Avenue; call (212) 570-3600.
MoMA is located at 11 West 53rd Street; call (212) 708-9400.
