Bulthaup Opens Canada Flagship

The showroom’s glass-clad exterior offers pedestrian views.

Bulthaup now has a home for its award-winning culinary products in Canada. The German kitchen manufacturer’s first Canadian flagship, in the heart of Toronto’s east-end design district, was designed by showroom manager and architect Antje Bulthaup, granddaughter of the company’s founder.

Carved out of the southwest corner of the new SAS Building on the corner of King and Ontario Streets, the 1,900-square-foot glass-clad showroom offers foot-traffic seductive interior views. Inside, kitchens are accented by tactile elements such as maple drawer organizers, porcelain herb pots, and handcrafted terracotta bread boxes. All components of Bulthaup’s newest product line, b3, are suspended from a hidden steel frame—utilizing traditionally unused space.

Currently, Bulthaup products—custom made in a factory in Aich, Germany—can be found in over 40 countries. Since its founding over 50 years ago, Bulthaup has received prestigious awards including the 1997 European Union Design Prize, a 2003 Red Dot Award, and a Good Design Award in 2004 from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.
