Remains of the Day

edited by Elana Frankel -- Interior Design, 4/1/2001 12:00:00 AM

MELTEM BIREY AND RJ THORNBURG comb auction houses and flea markets, gift shows and local artist studios to find merchandise for Flotsam + Jetsam, their European-style interior design atelier with a retail extension. The trained architect and interior designer offer consulting services as well as one-of-a-kind objects from furniture to original art. Situated in the heart of Philadelphia's revitalized urban center, the shop is set up like a home (albeit without a bedroom) with various vignettes. "We do not sell mass merchandise," says Birey. "There are no stacked, repetitive items. We compose spaces." Although the duo is working on a line of their own furniture, the current offering includes modern eclectic items, which present "whimsical, colorful, unintimidating as well as sophisticated products." Flotsam + Jetsam 149 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. www.flotsamandjetsam.com.
