Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen was recently selected by Alpha Workshops as an Alpha Awards honoree. She will be feted with a special introduction by famed designer Clodagh at the 10th annual ceremony and charity event May 11 at the Prince George Ballroom in New York.
“Cindy’s exuberant embrace of Alpha is notable. She gets us,” said Ken Wampler, Alpha Workshops’ executive director. That's what we always intended the awards to be about, honoring people who connected with us and did what they could to help.”
Founded in 1995, The Alpha Workshops is the only non-profit organization in the United States that trains and employs people living with HIV/AIDS in the field of the decorative arts. Their highly regarded design studio, staffed completely by graduate trainees, is a valuable resource for handcrafted wallpapers, hand cast lamps, on-site custom painting, and decorative finishes.
The Alpha Awards originated in 2000 and past honorees have included Interior Design Hall of Fame member Jamie Drake and Cooper Hewitt Design Museum curator Gregory Herringshaw. This year, Allen is joined by fellow honorees Celerie Kemble, founder of Kemble Interiors, and Tiffany & Co.’s Allen Nissim.
Allen has supported Alpha Workshops both professionally and personally for many years and, by embracing their unique vision, she has helped Alpha gain professional credibility. When she showcased Alpha Workshops in the inaugural redesigned edition of Interior Design, the article clearly detailed their dual purpose and complexity in great depth. At the Alpha Awards, Allen will be introduced by Interior Design Hall of Famer Clodagh, whose trailblazing aesthetic sensibility and extraordinary personal vision has established her as a force, not unlike Allen, in the design community.
Sponsored by Bloomberg, Benjamin Moore & Co., New York Design Center, Odegard, Pollack, Larson-Juhl and others, the 2009 Alpha Awards will take place Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Alpha Workshops’ training and employment programs. Regarding the August 2009 issue; the feeling suddenly is it is difficult to 'see'anything well. Everything seems to run together...and I was left with the feeling the ads became the eye's resting place rather than text and product display. Please accept this as a non-combative feeling, rather than complaint.
I just reviewed the issue to see if I was just being crabby and reactionary; no--too many small images and text hard to relate to images.
Thank you for the magazine, however...I always like seeing it in my inbox.
