Ando's Debut

Staff -- Interior Design, 10/1/2001 12:00:00 AM

The new Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, opening October 17 in St. Louis, is the first institutional project in the United States by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Known for his mastery of geometric forms and shadow play, the Pritzker Prize-winning Ando designed the 23,600-sq.-ft. freestanding Foundation building as an asymmetrical composition of smooth concrete and glass, with dramatic elements of light and water. In order to foster a dialogue between architect and artists, the Foundation commissioned artworks to be incorporated into the building's design including a 28-ft.-tall, painted-aluminum work (shown here) by Ellsworth Kelly and a torqued spiral by Richard Serra.
