Magic Carpet

Staff -- Interior Design, 5/1/2002 12:00:00 AM

Under the auspices of the Rural Studio, the outreach program of Auburn University's College of Architecture, Design, and Construction, students develop alternative sustainable building materials and construct houses to improve living conditions in rural Alabama. Collaborating with Interface Carpet, the Rural Studio's student team completed the Lucy House for Lucy Harris of Mason's Bend. Built using Interface carpet byproducts, steel columns, threaded rods, and wooden box beams, the house was selected for this year's Whitney Biennial. The Rural Studio's next big project is one of Interface's NeoCon showrooms, to feature carpet-tile shingled elevations and randomly stacked tiles inspired by the Lucy House.
