You Move Me

Edited by Annie Block -- Interior Design, 3/1/2008 12:00:00 AM

With recycling de rigueur, designers and artists alike are asking: Are you finished with that? Transportation castoffs are particularly in vogue—from handlebars and tires to under-the-hood machinery. So pull right up.

Bike Furniture Design's Andy Gregg turns junked Schwinns and BMXs into cycle-centric seating. For his Milano Mini-Deluxe lounge chair, he combines handlebars, wheels, and tires, then adds Pro Pad cushions normally used for motorcycles.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals can park it. Yong Ho Ji's Ram Head 5 is composed primarily of recycled tires. Based in Seoul, South Korea, the sculptor is making his U.S. debut at the Gana Art gallery's new satellite in New York on April 17.

In the hands of Campbell Levy Designs, the discarded crankshafts of rare automobiles find new life as custom lamps that'll really start your engine. Enthusiasts send in their very own worn-out shafts for re purposing or choose from in-stock salvage. Take this 1975 Toyota Land Cruiser crankshaft, now outfitted with brass hardware and a string shade, or this 1989 Mazda overhead camshaft.
