Dufner Heighes (Manhattan Loft, page 124) is the architectural partnership of Gregory Dufner and Daniel Heighes Wismer, founded in 1999. Projects to date have included residences and the interior of a restaurant in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The team has also designed tableware and furniture. (The firm's J side tables were selected for Interior Design's Future Furniture: A Juried Design Exhibition for 2001.) Gensler New York (ING Direct Café, page 132) appointed a ten-strong team for the project: vice president/managing and project principal Robin Klehr Avia, FIIDA, vice president/design director John Bricker, project director Julia Simet, IIDA, senior associate/project designer Peter Wang, associate/project manager Andrew Kamins, designers Gregory Okshteyn and Laurent Lisimachio, graphics design project manager Jill Wittnebel, and graphic design associate Beth Novitsky with Tracy Silverstein. Avia, responsible for bringing in the subject project, has had 25 years' experience in the design business, all but four of them with Gensler. Among other honors, she oversees the New York office with its staff of 460, holding similar responsibilities for the outposts in Boston and Parsippany, NJ. Bricker founded the firm's retail and branding studio in 1980; nine years later he was appointed vice president and director of said studio. Wang joined Gensler in 1992, straight from earning his M.Arch. degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, this atop his B.Arch. from Columbia University. Lindy Roy (P.S.1, page 138), born and raised in South Africa, received her B.Arch. from University of Capetown and her M.Arch. from Columbia University. Prior to launching her namesake studio in 2000, Roy worked independently and for a number of architecture firms, including a two-year stint in the offices of Peter Eisenman. She also teaches architecture at Princeton and Cooper Union. Her work will be featured in a hotel exhibition slated for next fall at the Cooper-Hewitt and a forthcoming installation at Artist's Space in New York. Isay Weinfeld (Forum Retail Shop, page 142) trained as an architect and later chaired the architectural theory program at Mackenzie University in his native São Paulo, Brazil. In addition to designing Forum and several bars, nightclubs, and shops in São Paulo, the architect created the sets for the city's last two fashion weeks, which are held twice a year in Oscar Niemeyer's iconic building for the São Paulo art biennial. He has also designed a number of residences, art galleries, hotels, schools, and offices. Outside traditional design work, Weinfeld is an accomplished filmmaker, designs theatrical sets, directs musical performances, and designs museum exhibitions in Brazil. Isay Weinfeld Arquiteto, R. Shamir Shah (Waaktaar Residence, page 148) grew up in Kenya before coming to the U.S. to study architecture at Yale. After graduation, he moved to New York and spent 12 years at a major architecture firm, where he headed the interiors studio for six years; he established Shamir Shah Design in Manhattan in 1999. Recently completed projects include several downtown lofts, a shop for the potter Jonathan Adler, and a 60-room hotel in Great Neck, New York, for the Philips Hotel Group, which also owns the Bryant Park Hotel in New York and the Shore Club in Miami Beach. GAD Architects (Boxer Café, page 156) was founded by Gökhan Avcioxglu as gaarchitects in 1994. The design/build firm, which serves residential and commercial clients, was renamed this year when Durmus Dilekci was promoted to partner. "GAD" is also an acronym for Global Architectural Development. Avcioxglu established his first partnership in 1990 after graduating from Seljuk University of Architecture. He has won numerous design competitions, writes and lectures on architecture and design, and has appeared on several Turkish TV programs. He is also a partner at terminal-nyc, a forum and retail space in New York for emerging interior and product designers. John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (The Brig, page 162) is a Los Angeles-based firm founded in 1995. Friedman earned an undergraduate degree in architecture at MIT, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and masters' degrees from Oxford University and Harvard. He previously worked in the Portugal office of Pritzker Prize recipient Alvaro Siza. Friedman was awarded a silver medal from the AIA. Kimm earned a B.A. in economics from Cornell and an M.Arch. from Harvard, where she served on the editorial board of the Harvard Architecture Review. She is the recipient of an AIA merit citation and a Fulbright scholarship, which enabled her to study housing in Asia. The partners, who have completed a golf club in Korea and club in Santa Monica, currently have a range of project types in the works. They include a public elementary school in Los Angeles, a senior housing complex in South Central Los Angeles, a restaurant in Hollywood, and residences. Grupo Arquitectura (Farca Residence, page 168) was formed in 1980 and has created a diverse body of work throughout Mexico. In addition to ground-up houses and apartment interiors, the firm has created apartment and commercial buildings and designed a range of commercial interiors including a law office and pavilion for Imagen Broadcasting. Rather than depending solely on commissioned jobs, Grupo Arquitectura often develops its own projects. Its architects scout properties, develop appropriate proposals, and assemble investors. Founder Daniel Álvarez was born in Mexico City and studied architecture at the Iberoamericana University, where he later taught. Grupo Arquitectura, Atlanta 143 Col. Stephen Yablon (Sony New Technology Holdings, page 174) founded his firm in 1995 after serving his enviably fine apprenticeship with, in chronological order, Gruzen and Partners, I.M. Pei & Partners, and Gwathmey Siegel. His academic training came from Washington University and Columbia University, certified with bachelor's and master's degrees respectively. A relatively early assignment was the Vera Institute of Justice headquarters in Manhattan's Woolworth Building; more recent commissions include master plans for several institutions, community centers, Sony installations, and other work for private and business clients including headquarters for AFD Contract Furnishings. Yablon has been a critic/lecturer at Ohio State University, New Jersey, and New York Institutes of Technology, as well as Parsons School of Design. Project architect Brad Farwell is a Yale graduate.
