Veuve Cliquot Debuts DesignBox

The new eco-friendly packaging from the famous French champagne house will debut in this fall.

Despite a long legacy dating back to 1772, Veuve Cliquot is showing they can think outside of the box when it comes to design. The famed French champagne house will be debuting their new green DesignBox packaging this fall.

Billed as the first industrially produced eco-friendly presentation box, DesignBox features recyclable paper from FSC-certified forests. Additionally, the bubbly boxes use no plastic lamination, allowing them to be placed with other paper products in recycling areas. Inks, glues, and solvents represent less than five percent of the total weight of the product.

The packaging is both mechanized and foldable, allowing the boxes to be delivered flat, optimizing the company's transport volume, thus limiting carbon dioxide emissions. It also features micro-grooving, which reduces the amount of paper necessary for each box while maintaining the mechanical equivalent of standard compact paper box of the same size.

The company is rolling out DesignBox in typical grand fashion, enlisting product design heavyweights Tom Dixon, Front Design, and 5.5 Designers to create prototype interpretations of the new wrappers. The company exhibited the trio's designs at booths at both the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April and Art Basel earlier this month. Dixon conceived the champagne casings as the cardboard Comet Lamp, while 5.5 created a champagne cellar using the DesignBox as bricks for the space. Front Design got into the relaxing spirit of the spirit, creating a chaise lounge—perfect for both sitting and sipping.
