Every two years, the nonprofit World Monuments Fund releases its World Monuments Watch list of 100 Most Endangered Sites. For the first time in the program's eight-year run, the list for 2004 includes a site on every continent. There's Saint John's Anglican Church in Nova Scotia, Canada, the rock-art sites in Vallegrande and Saipina, Bolivia, explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's hut in Antarctica, and the looted Nimrud and Nineveh Palaces in Iraq to name a few.
The list aims to attract international attention and funds for the sites' rescue and/or spur local governments to take action. As WMF president Bonnie Burnham puts it, "We're working to preserve these treasures, to save for future generations the structures that tell us who we are. To lose any one would diminish us all."
We would love your feedback!
