On Thursday, February 12, the Southwest Chapter of IIDA hosted the 2nd annual Couture 2009, an outside-the-box evening of interior design and runway fashion. More than 30 local design firms competed to place in one of six categories, each showcasing original fashions designed and produced by the firms. Increasing the competition’s level of difficulty, all entered garments were required to be comprised entirely of interior design materials and finishes including carpeting, wall covering, tile, textiles, and more.

Participating design firms were randomly paired with an interior design-related manufacturer/vendor, as well as a specific color, to incorporate into their respective garments. This year, colors were chosen from Ultron’s 2009 Color Forecast. Four student teams from surrounding colleges joined their professional peers in the competition, their garments introducing each of the four Ultron color categories: Air, Earth, Water, and Fire.

The sophomore event, which attracted over 600 guests, took place at the Phoenix Art Museum—designed and renovated by Tod Williams/Billie Tsien & Associates—beneath “Mohl ip,” a large light installation by renowned “sculptor of light” James Turrell. Providing an interactive backdrop for the runway show, the installation comprised a glowing light box that continually rotated hue. Proceeds from the event benefited The Wellness Community, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free emotional support and education for those living with cancer.
