When the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art opened in 1935, it was the first West Coast museum devoted solely to 20th century art. Now in its 75th anniversary year, the institution is collaborating with one of its younger hometown heros, the Gap apparel chain, on a unique line of eight limited-edition, artist-designed T-shirts.
The Bay Area's respective bastions of contemporary art and hip fashion selected nine artists, each with a connection to the region, to help toast the diamond jubilee: Rosana Castrillo Diaz, Simon Evans, Chris Johanson, Kerry James Marshall, Barry McGee, Ed Ruscha, Leslie Shows, and the team of Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel. The group of artists is also represented in SFMOMA's series of anniversary exhibitions and programs, 75 Years of Looking Forward.

The T-shirts are available for $24.50 at both the SFMOMA MuseumStore and the store's website, in addition to 13 Gap stores in the San Francisco area.
"As a San Francisco-based company with a long history of supporting the arts, we're honored to partner with SFMOMA to celebrate the museum's 75th anniversary," says Marka Hansen, president of Gap North America. "This limited edition T-shirt collection celebrates the intersection of art and fashion and enables people to experience the work of these distinguished artists in a different way."
