Christie’s to Hold Decorative Arts Week
Sale items include ormolu-mounted turquoise vases by Alfred Beurdeley and a silver tureen by Edmé-Pierre Balzac.

From October 19-27, New York auction house Christie’s will cover 500 years of design with European Decorative Arts Week. Design enthusiasts and collectors alike will be privy to sales, public exhibitions, lectures, and book signings.
Five sales will be held during the eight-day program, covering periods including the Renaissance, the Belle Époque, and beyond. First up is Segoura: Important French Furniture & Old Master Paintings, on October 19. Offering French furniture, works of art and Old Master paintings from Maurice Segoura, the sale will include over 240 items, from both his renowned shop and his private collection.
Important European Furniture, Works of Art, Ceramics & Carpets will take place on October 20, followed by 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art & Ceramics on October 24. The latter will feature the ormolu-mounted turquoise vases by Alfred Beurdeley, shown here. ($30,000-50,000). On October 26, Important Silver & Objects of Vertu will draw silver enthusiasts with a vast assortment of rare items, such as a silver tureen by Edmé-Pierre Balzac, estimated to sell for over $400,000. A pair of rococo giltwood armchairs attributed to the father and son London cabinet makers, William and Richard Gomm, will hit the auction block in the fifth and final sale, Important English Furniture Including Property from the Kersey Coates Reed House: A David Adler & Frances Elkins Commission.
The event lineup includes a reading and book signing of Caroline Weber’s book, Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution on October 16 at 6pm and the panel discussion Juxtapositions: 18th Century Furniture in the Modern Interior, on October 23 at 6:45.
