In an effort to stamp out hunger in the Valley of the Sun, AIA Phoenix Metro teamed up with the local chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services to host the fourth annual Phoenix Canstruction competition to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.
Canstruction combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. Competing teams, led by architects, engineers, and contactors, showcased their talents by designing and building life-sized structures made entirely out of canned foods.

In the 12-hour allotted time constraint, the teams, comprised of A&D professionals as well as high school and college-aged students, constructed their entries February 19 and 20; the designs were kept on display to the public through February 27. The competition concluded with awards chosen for Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Most Cans, and Jurors’ Favorite by a panel of judges, as well as the AIA Phoenix Metro People’s Choice award. Winners from the competition will compete in the upcoming 2010 international Canstruction competition.
