The U.S. Green Building Council has a new, larger headquarters sporting an environmentally-conscious design. Located at 1800 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 300 in Washington, D.C., the space is in response to the nonprofit organization's employee and member growth.
A sustainable design puts the USGBC on track to receive LEED certification. Interiors maximize the use of energy-efficient fixtures and work areas are situated to best utilize daytime lighting. Thanks to low-flow plumbing and dual-flush commodes, the space consumes 40 percent less water than a traditional space of the same size. Plus, energy consumed is offset by renewable sources.
Building materials were selected for both their eco qualities and visually appealing design. Flooring is bamboo, linoleum, and cork, and salvaged wood timbers frame the circumference of an ellipse-shaped conference room. All paints and coatings used are low-VOC (volatile organic compound).
The building is funded by corporate sponsors including 3form, Perkins+Will, Knoll, Santec, and Greenlight Strategies.
