J.B. Boyd brings the stark Namibian landscape's syringa trees to Charleston, South Carolina, in "The Africa Paintings" at Robert Lange Studios. Although the composition of Thinking About You is simple, Boyd's method is complex: He first takes a photo with a 35 millimeter camera; then he makes a pencil sketch of the composition, applies a wash of burnt sienna and turpentine, and layers in color with oils before glazing the surface with cold wax. The Vietnam War yielded T-shirts emblazoned with the peace sign. Scarves, dresses, and even tablecloths produced during World War II made political statements, too, as seen in "Wearing Propaganda: Textiles on the Home Front in Japan, Britain, and the United States, 1931-1945" at New York's Bard Graduate Center. This 1940's men's kimono is one item in the 130-piece show, which coincides with the 60th an- niversary of the end of World War II. November 18–February 5; 212-501-3000; bgc.bard.edu.
