It's a BoY

Just back from this magazine's first ever Best of Year Awards at the Guggenheim—and ready to send our BoY off to the printing presses as the opener of our December issue—I started to think about retrospectives in general. Some might well describe them as self-referential hooey. And in the fast-paced playpen of publishing, where even the mildest "yesterday" quickly puts an end to the fun and games, the venerable retrospective is open to attack as a waste of good paper and valuable time. Yet, naysayers be damned, we're proud to present in published form all the projects and products we just showed off to a crowd of 800-plus in Frank's museum. Whether or not you were there that night, I trust you will embrace the following pages as beacons shining on a path through 2006 and steering us in the right direction for 2007.
Along with my best wishes to everyone who participated, I want to extend a warm thank-you to the awards' designer, Harry Allen—no, we're not related—as well as to the judges who joined me in selecting the very best projects: Arthur Casas, Pam Light, Nick Luzietti, and Ali Tayar.
Have a splendid and peaceful New Year.
