Jonathan Browning takes the ordinary—Popsicle sticks, glass bells, a horseshoe—and makes it extraordinary, just by adding bronze and his signature style. The lighting designer was trained and worked as an architect before becoming the executive vice president of design for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, where he was responsible for re-conceiving the images of Sheraton, W, and the Westin, among other chains. In 2003, he established his own design company to produce high quality cast bronze lighting.

With their confident and bold lines, his piecesreflect the look of French industrial and decorative arts of the 1920's, '30s, and '40s, and are forged at foundries devoted to metalworking. Single- and double-pendant lamps, such as the Keule, offer clean lines via a crystal, bell-shaped shade. An optional bronze halo, reminiscent of a deco bracelet, can be added to each lamp. The Zweig wall sconces are topped with silk shades shifted to the side, another nod to Art Deco style. The simple masculinity of the Dornstab floor lamp comes from its rosewood branch stem and black bronze horseshoe base. The elegant Rosewood chandelier recalls the Popsicle sticks that children use to realize their proto-architectural dreams. It comes in three shapes: round, oval, and long. 415-401-9999; jonathanbrowninginc.com. circle 663
