Four commercial design firms take top honors in flooring manufacturer Shaw Contract's first-annual “Design Is…” competition. With the awards program—which drew 145 qualified submissions—the flooring manufacturer intends to recognize projects employing innovative design solutions.
For its transformation of Neenah Papers in Atlanta, Giorgia, Idea|Span is Winner with Award of Distinction. Drawing design cues from the paper the manufacturer produces, the design firm created a space playing on texture, lighting, and materials.
The three additional awards went to VOA Associates Incorporated, Sasaki Associates, and Studio Hive. VOA Associates Incorporated is recognized for the “smart building” it created for ABM AMRO in Chicago, a space which features raised flooring, de-mountable walls, and a 120-degree furniture configuration. Sasaki Associates caught the judges’ eye with its own new office space, located in San Francisco’s Union Square. For Minneapolis-based Little & Company, Studio Hive created a space both engaging the human senses and cutting real estate costs.
“We hope the winners of the inaugural competition will inspire other organizations to raise their overall standards of smart design, by striving for enhanced sustainability or responsible spending, streamlining operations or reducing energy and material waste in every project they begin,” says John Stephens, vice president of marketing for Shaw Contract Group.
The judging panel was comprised of members of the design community.
Entry forms for the 2007 Design Is…Award will be available online in the Fall of 2007.
We would love your feedback!
