What do a winery in Santa Barbara and a permafrost museum in Siberia have in common? Both projects have won honors--for David Yum Architects and Leeser Architecture, respectively--in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter's2008 Design Award competition.
Excellence in interiors, architecture, and projects not yet built were recognized with 10 honor and 20 merit awards, which were selected from 400 submissions from 13 countries by a jury that included David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates and Pamela Babey of BAMO.
Steven Holl Architects grabbed the top prize as sole honor winner in the architecture category for its Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Honor awardees in interior architecture were Joel Sanders Architect, De-Spec/Vista Engineering, and Architecture Research Office. Project award winners were OBRA Architects, David Yum Architects, Toshiko Mori Architect, Cook+Fox Architect, Leeser Architecture, and the consortium of Rogers Marvel/West8/Diller Scofido + Renfrew/Quennell Rothschild/SMWM.
New to the AIA New York Chapter’s giving season is a separate set of Building Type Awards, established in conjunction with the Boston Society of Architects to recognize achievements in three specialized areas: Educational Facility Design, Sustainable Design, and Urban Design. Specifically focused on works in New York and Massachusetts, these honors will be announced later this month.
Winning Design Awards and Building Type Awards projects will be toasted together at a luncheon on April 30, and the winning Design Awards projects will be on display at the chapter’s Center for Architecture through May 1.
"The AIA New York Chapter’s Design Awards program is intended to increase awareness of outstanding design by New York architects, as well as projects within the city," says James McCullar, the 2008 AIA New York Chapter president. "The awards also honor the architects, clients, and design consultants who work together to improve New York’s built environment."
