Shaw Industries Earns Recycling Award

The manufacturer reduced both landfill waste and use of raw materials.

An innovative cradle to cradle recycling program has earned Shaw Industries kudos from the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE). The carpet manufacturer, which bills itself as the world's largest, was named the Large Recycler of the Year for both reducing landfill waste and use of raw materials.

Through its nation-wide post consumer carpet recycling centers, Shaw has collected 165 million pounds of carpet. Of that number, the company has recycled 100 million pounds at its Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility. Evergreen can process any carpet made with nylon 6 fiber -- such as the firm's nylon brands Eco Solution Q and Anso.

Shaw has also boosted the amount of recycled content available for the production of its new products.

"Shaw has come a long way in implementing its cradle-to-cradle products," says company president Randy Merritt. "Beyond the ability to design a product for reclamation and recycling through Evergreen, we had to organize and facilitate a nationwide collections network to service our customer’s recycling needs."

Conceived to encourage carpet recycling, reuse and waste reduction of post consumer carpet, CARE is a joint industry-government initiative.
