Margulies & Associates Project Wins Accolades

Located in Hingham, Massachusetts, the 329,000-square-foot office building is now gunning for LEED Silver certification.

The Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts has named an office complex designed by Margulies & Associates project of the year. Honors for the Boston-based architecture and design firm's work, a new South Shore headquarters for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA), were recently announced in Professional Contractor, ASM's quarterly newsletter.

The 329,000-square-foot space, located at 25 Technology Place in Hingham, Massachusetts, includes training and data centers, a child care space and cafeteria. A five-level, 1,400-car parking garage is linked directly to the main lobby by an all-weather connection.

Completed last June, the building is expected to be certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council. The facility was designed for future expansions that will require no additional infrastructure. Site clearing and re-grading were minimized to preserve as many trees as possible. Inside the four-story structure, green design specifications should result in 21 percent energy savings and 20 percent water savings per year over the national average for traditional office buildings.

"This new facility proves that solutions to building challenges such as reducing energy usage and creating a durable, handsome structure that safeguards the welfare of both its occupants and the environment are not in conflict with one another, and are, in fact, intertwined," says Daniel Perruzzi, principal of Margulies & Associates.

Larry Healey, director of real estate and design and planning at BCBSMA adds, "One of the ways this building stands out from other suburban commercial office facilities is the way Margulies & Associates treated the site. The opportunity to employ green building design while controlling project costs was very important to us. The entire project team took this to heart and made it a reality."

The project team included construction manager Turner Construction, structural engineer Souza True & Partners, landscape architect Brown Richardson & Rowe, and civil engineer BSC Group.
