The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) Foundation, an organization funded through an endowment established by the partners of architecture firm SOM, has launched a new awards program with a hefty prize. One lucky (and promising) architecture or design student will receive a $50,000 grant. The runner-up will take home a $20,000 traveling fellowship.

The program, launched in celebration of the Foundation’s 25-year legacy, is open to graduating undergraduate and graduate students of accredited U.S. schools of architecture, urban planning, and design. Winners will be selected by an independent jury of professionals

The Foundation which was developed to "broaden the education of young architects and engineers through traveling fellowships," according to press material, also offers an annual $10,000 Structural Engineering Traveling Fellowship and an annual $10,000 United Kingdom Award. In addition to the SOM prize, the Foundation will launch the China Prize this year, a $10,000 award. In total, the organization will bestow $100,000 in awards and travel fellowships during 2006. Application and deadline information is available online.
