San Francisco Celebrates with Month-Long Architecture + the City Festival

Mayor Gavin Newsom officially proclaimed September Architecture and the City month.

The City by the Bay is brimming with anticipation for its fifth annual, month-long Architecture + the City Festival, celebrating design and San Francisco's built environment with tours, films, exhibitions, lectures, and green programming throughout September.

Last year's festival, also organized by the American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter and the Center for Architecture + Design, attracted more than 20,000 attendees. This year's theme, Design for the Community, has spurred San Francisco's dashing mayor Gavin Newsom to officially proclaim September Architecture and the City month.

Amongst the highlights for the 2008 program are the Home Tours weekend from September 13-14, the Architectural Gems bike tour on September 20, and the Golden Gate Bridge Tour on September 28. San Francisco is also currently experiencing a design renaissance of sorts, with the recent opening of Daniel Libeskind's Contemporary Jewish Museum and Renzo Piano's California Academy of Sciences building slated to open next month, just in time for the festival.
