You may think all she wants to do is have some fun, but songstress Sheryl Crow is in fact a dedicated environmental advocate who is lending her talents to this year's Greenbuild conference.
The U.S. Green Building Council has tapped the nine-time Grammy winner to open the annual forum on sustainable buildings and communities with a performance on November 11 at Chase Field, home of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.
"Beyond her music, Sheryl Crow's informed and effective advocacy made her the natural choice to help us open Greenbuild," says USGBC president and CEO, Rick Fedrizzi. "More than 25,000 people gather every year at Greenbuild because we know that the building industry can play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy independence and economic growth."
Crow, a former elementary school teacher, has continually pushed for the adoption of efficient technologies including CFLs and biofuels. "Performing at Greenbuild is like being on the international stage of the green movement, celebrating with you the progress we're making on this important issue," says Crow. The performance at Chase Field will crown an evening of feature presentations and a keynote address by an as-yet-unnamed speaker. Past Greenbuild keynoters have ranged from former President Bill Clinton to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The Greenbuild International Conference & Expo will continue through November 13 at the Phoenix Convention Center and feature 1,900 exhibition booths, more than 100 educational sessions, LEED and Education Provider workshops, a two day Residential Summit, and tours of local green building sites.
