A Growth Industry

The California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, gives new meaning to the phrase "grow your own." In planning a reef for the academy's future facility by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, designers could hardly just dial up a florist for the colorful sprays of endangered coral. So the staff biologists are already tending a nursery of young coral, in preparation for the 2008 opening date.
